形容詞はdiscourse semanticsをたくさん持っている．文字上の，感情的な，文化的な，metaphoricな文章の意味を理解するための主要要素となることが多い．それらの形式的な意味論は特に文法や形式的な意味論の上で研究されてきた．formal ontologyとセマンティックウェブの貢献もいくつかある．しかし，標準的に形容詞を扱う形式的な方法はまだない．標準的な方法とは，理論的にも計算機を用いた自然言語理解の両方の関心事を解決可能な能力を持つようなものである．この原稿では，私たちは既存の方法をまとめ，厳密に近いけれど，実用的な表現に近いいくつかの代替解決法を提案する．そして，最新のopen knowledge extractionツールであるFREDの中核resourceとしてライトウェイトな形容詞オントロジーの実装についても説明する．
