製品の構造は要素(components)と特徴(features)と組み合わせ(assemblies)を描いて紐づけることで工学的モデルとして表現される．それらの理解は設計と製造の両方の知識を要求する．そして，より文脈を理解した推論がそれらを正しく読むために必要となる．これらの表現は工学的な活動に必須であるため，これらのモデルの明確な意味が欠けていると，それらを評価したり開発したりする情報システムの利用に悪影響がある．私たちは，この問題に取り組む．構造表現の異なる解釈を同定することによって．そして，形式的な属性(property)について議論する．要素と特徴とその組み合わせの表現のために適した言語について議論する．私たちは要素と特徴の表現が標準でないmereologyを要求することを示す．
